Creative Writing Workshop

19th March 2018

A Level English Literature and Language students, and some of our most promising younger writers, enjoyed a day of creative writing workshops in the Upper School Library on Wednesday.

The sessions were led by Sue Wilsea, who has taught creative writing on the degree course at Hull University, and had her short stories broadcast on BBC Radio, and shortlisted for some of the most prestigious writing awards in the country,

Sue focused the workshops on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, an A Level text. Students were encouraged to review different aspects of the novel, including the use of colour, characterisation, and the role of the narrator. They also explored the impact of the five senses on writing, creating work about their formative childhood experiences, and building background stories on the less developed characters in the novel.

It was fabulous to listen to students read out their work and hear Sue’s enthusiastic feedback. We really have some incredibly gifted pupils at Longcroft, and it’s thrilling to watch their writing grow.

A big thank you to Sue Wilsea for her energy and expertise.
